Castles, by R. Allen Brown, is a Junior Heritage Book published in Great Britain, focusing on castles in that land. This is appropriate, since that’s where all the good castles are! I have seen so many in England, Scotland, and Wales and yet I have not seen even half the existing ones. This is a lovely book, with clear text and really wonderful illustrations that both show the overall shape of real castles through photographs and provide clear diagrams of how various aspects of their construction were made to function. I think any child with an interest in architecture would love this book. By “any child” I really mean “every child,” since buildings are constant companions in our lives – we live in them, work in them, get married and worship in them, and die in them. Therefore, we should take an interest in them. Castles would be appropriate for middle school or perhaps a very good upper elementary student.
