I am so grateful to Moody Publishers for their continued interest in our book reviews. When they reached out with options for this cycle, this one immediately caught my attention as a possible mom’s book club selection. I had already chosen Unhurried for this fall and love it, so I wondered if Overwhelmed Mom might feel redundant. I’m delighted to say that not only is it not redundant, but it stands powerfully on its own—and, in fact, will be an excellent companion to Unhurried. I think the moms in my book club will find this book both nourishing and lovingly challenging.
Many of my mom friends have raved about Holy Hygge, but this is the first of Jaime Erickson’s books that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last. Both Holy Hygge and Homeschool Bravely are now in my cart.
Written with honesty and humility, Erickson’s voice is warm, lively, and deeply relatable. She invites moms to reflect on the habits and attitudes shaping their family life, those that nurture peace and those that contribute to chaos, and she does so in a way that feels practical and encouraging rather than overwhelming or judgmental. Each chapter builds on a single principle, stacking intentionally on the ones before it. And, each is filled with relatable stories drawn from her own experience. The chapters conclude with thoughtful journaling or discussion questions which will support my book club discussion well. Some of the moms in my library have already noted how intriguing they find the last section of each chapter – an optional domestic challenge designed to help create focus and order at home.
This book was a joy to read and would be excellent if read alone. As a book club pick, however, I think it has the potential to make an even greater impact. Its format invites us to slow down, focus on one principle at a time, and reflect together on what truly matters. I expect it to lead us into meaningful conversation while offering gentle, practical ways to step out of the overwhelm so many of us carry.
