Irene and Will (W. W.) were a wife and husband team who wrote and illustrated children’s books. Irene was the illustrator and Will was the author. Their delightful book, Picture Book of Animal Babies, published in 1947, should fascinate young children as their ears hear the words and their eyes feast on the illustrations. The text is simple and sweet and blends well with the pictures, which are lovely realistic illustrations, black and white and in color, with a slightly fuzzy edge that seems to give them a warm glow. Baby animals roll and tumble and play, watched over tenderly by their mothers. This book would be good to read to a child as an introduction, before they can read for themselves, to Plumfield Press’ reprint of The True Book of Animal Babies, by Illa Podendorf, a higher reading level and intellectual content book that still focuses on animal babies.
