When I was a boy in the 1960s, I read many back issues of Boys’ Life since my nine-year-older cousin had been a Boy Scout and had saved his copies. I loved the wonderful comic strips and stories, though at that time I concentrated mainly on the science fiction ones. Many a well-known science-fiction writer that I encountered later in life got his start in the Boys Life magazine. The editors at that time obviously knew what boys liked to read and organized a wonderful magazine. Somehow I missed the World War II stories, maybe because my interest in World War II developed later than my interest in science fiction! In any event, The Boys’ Life Book of World War II Stories, published in 1965, is a selection of true World War II stories, mostly taken from the pages of Boys Life magazine, although some were collected from other sources. The stories provide a detailed, personal look at various military situations, ranging from Europe to the Pacific, in the air and on the ground, from the beginning to near the end of the war. They are written as exciting stories, not dry historical accounts, and interesting to read. I note that a little bit of research will find that in the immediate post-war years, late 1940s and early 1950s, there were many first-hand accounts written of World War II experiences. I would guess that the stories in The Boys’ Life Book of World War II Stories came from some of these accounts. I would put the reading level of this wonderful book at the middle school level, though the stories and their content would be interesting to older readers as well.
