This darling picture book by Leslie Baker uses simple language and elegant watercolor illustrations to take children on a short tour of Paris through the adventures of a calico kitty named Alice.
When Alice arrives at Great Auntie Isabella's Paris home, she spots something interesting – a little mouse. And off she goes, chasing the mouse, finding fish at the market, encountering dogs everywhere, sneaking into the Louvre, being chased by a terrier, and then falling into the River Seine. But instead of landing in the water, she lands on top of a bateau-mouche traveling up the river. Finally, tired, dirty, and hungry, she finds a flower garden where she can take a sunbath. When she wakes, a gardener is shaking a rake at her, but her girl Annie and Great Auntie Isabella are there to rescue her and take her back home.
This story is written with an economy of words so that the paintings can do the most talking. The illustrations beautifully capture the charm of Paris, inviting young readers to experience the city through Alice's eyes. The adventure is simple yet engaging, making it a delightful read-aloud choice. With its gentle storyline and energetic artwork, Paris Cat offers children a lovely glimpse into an ordinary day in Paris.
