We are always on the lookout for picture book biographies. When we saw Strange Creatures at a library sale, we didn’t hesitate to grab it.
I am familiar with Lita Judge’s work and have learned to approach her books with both enthusiasm and discernment. Some—like One Thousand Tracings and this title—are absolutely marvelous. Others contain content that would concern many parents and educators, like this one. I always recommend previewing her work carefully or checking trusted review sources before adding her titles to a collection.
This picture book biography is fascinating and well told. Thanks to Judge, we learn how unique and awkward Walter Rothschild was until he found scientists like himself. The illustrations are lively and fun to take in. Rothschild’s story is interesting and worth knowing—especially for young readers who feel a bit out of step with their peers and might be encouraged by his peculiar, brilliant path.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys picture book biographies, bug collectors, animal lovers, natural history enthusiasts, and those who appreciate reading about the struggles and triumphs of unique individuals.
