As an intern at Plumfield library, I am excited to read and share about A Grain of Rice by Helena Clare Pittman. I absolutely loved this book. There was not one thing that I did not enjoy about this book. A few things I really appreciated about this book is that it took place in China. As I was originally born in China, I love learning and reading books that take place in China.
This book is appropriate for readers of all ages. A few things that would concern a parent is that the emperor does call the peasant a fool, but no bad words are said. This book reminds me a lot of The Empty Pot by Demi. This book also takes place in China with an emperor as a main character. Another book it also reminds me of is a Chinese folktale,The Pearl that Shone in the Dark. One big thing that I find similar is there are two peasant brothers who want to marry the dragon king’s daughter. I would definitely recommend A Grain of Rice as a read-aloud for the whole family.
