A Meeting In the Sky is a heartwarming tale about two great men that fought and met in World War II. This picture book, inspired by a true event, tells about Charlie Brown, an American farm boy that grows up to be a World War II bomber pilot, and Franz Stigler, a German city boy who also grows up to be a pilot. This tale was made exciting when Charlie and Franz met in the sky during a bombing mission when Charlie’s plane, damaged, had been left behind the rest of his formation. The German pilot, Franz, came up to attack Charlie but something unexpected happens. I don’t want to ruin the ending so you’ll have to read the book to see what happens between Charlie and Franz.
I like how the illustrations depict the World War II planes in a way that makes the story come alive. I would compare A Meeting in the Sky to a chapter book called Enemy Brothers in which a boy from Germany and a young man from Britain meet during World War II. I liked everything about this book. The only thing that a parent might want to know is that most of the book is set in World War II. It is a picture book though, so it should be appropriate for most ages. I would suggest this story to 6-10- year-olds who want a WWII story of heroism and cool pictures.
